Amen on release order! I doubt I have anything new for comedies but was shocked by my ignorance of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang & In Bruges when I finally saw them. Death to Smoochy always feels overlooked & I love that Airheads received love recently. The fun part about comedies is what’s viewed as a problem through today’s eyes.
The only horror I can really offer is Frailty. I lied to myself for years & said I wasn’t into horror but I’ve been incorrect. The original Wicker Man; severely disappointed in Midsommar once I saw that.
Trying to watch Lathimos’s stuff & Dogtooth is as weird as you’d expect. Been going down the Wong Kar Wai train (thanks Criterion Channel!). Now to see your Roger Rabbit thoughts...
On recs for Q&A’s, I’ll happily take com/drama/film. Requests from shows would be CW Arrowverse shows, Agents of Shield, Don’t Trust the B, Fresh off the Boat, The Mick, Evil, The Americans, Boardwalk Empire. Hope that helps! Thank you for all!
Oh man, thanks! The recs (both for movies and Q&A guests) are super helpful.
I really loved The Lobster and The Favourite, but Lathimos's other stuff hasn't gone down as easily. I think one needs to be in the right frame of mind for them. But I generally like what he's doing.
And I forget where you are, but one of the "Friends of the Fest" shows is Chungking Express! Next week in Santa Monica put on by a friend of mine who hosts the Mubi podcast. I love that movie and will be there!
JUST saw Chungking for the first time. How are you with Refn? I can only handle half of his work but I very much approve of what he does. Loved Neon Demon. I feel that warmed me up to Infinity Pool, which gave me all sorts of shot/editing inspiration. Still have to see Possessor.
Chopsticks on Netflix is my rec. My sister and I have a tradition where every Christmas Eve we try to watch as many terrible movies as possible until we can't keep our eyes open (terribleness determined by log line ONLY) Every once in a while we find a gem like Chopsticks. Maybe it was because I was in a fugue state when we watched it (so please bear that in mind if you do end up watching it) but I genuinely enjoyed the arc the main character goes on and at no point could I have predicted what was going to happen next.

Not a Refn fan! Too cold for me.
The color grading in Duel is awesome.

Adding it to the watchlist!
