First of All
First of all, I have to apologize for how infrequently I’ve been posting this year, and especially the past few weeks. The year has been complete madness with some exciting writing work (both paid and unpaid), some exciting non-writing work, and, lately, we had some long-overdue work on our house which displaced us and our dogs for three weeks, making most any work impossible.
Luckily, our good friends were kind enough to let us stay at their place in the Central Coast region for the last week of construction. Their beautiful house provided both some much-needed breathing room as well as a lovely space to actually do some writing.
Here’s a photo I took of the very desolate town in which they live. This is the main street of the town at around 8pm:
There was nothing around, and I actually got some writing done! You’ll hear me mention in today’s podcast this 3-4-pages-a-day routine I’ve been doing since December. I’ll go more into depth on it at some point here, but it’s pretty self-explanatory. Write 3-4 pages a day! Doing this between Dec 1 and Feb 1 (and taking weekends and holidays off), I ended up with a decent first draft of a new feature! By the end of May, that feature is done and ready to go out. And I’m halfway through another, with a self-imposed due date of July 4 weekend. If I can keep up this 4 page per day schedule, I could have four new, polished feature scripts this year. That ain’t nothing.
I Don’t Understand You
A really fun episode today with David Joseph Craig & Brian Crano (writers/directors of I Don't Understand You). The married creators discuss the personal story behind the movie, writing the truth vs writing honestly, scenes you need, who your competition is, why knowing actors is a good thing, poking the turkey, and more.

Great installment, Ben! Fascinating podcast convo, and thanks for the written Substack update on your goings-on. Being displaced is tough, but glad you’ve landed someplace tenable for now. LOVE the 3-4page discipline…also advocated by C Robert Cargill…and am holding that as the gold standard for now.
Hope you and yours are well, and continue to appreciate you and all you do.
