I really enjoyed the new Disney+ movie Chang Can Dunk, so I was thrilled to talk with writer/director Jingyi Shao about getting his feature debut off the ground, turning a "feel-good sports movie" into a personal story, taking on a studio movie, the psychology of storytelling, and lots more. It’s a fun one.

Yes, this week’s episode begins on a very downbeat note! Sorry. But, yeah, The Writers Panel has been abruptly shoved off of our previous network. I was pretty disappointed by that when I recorded the intro.
But what a difference a week makes! Since then, I’ve embraced putting the show out independently, my friend and longtime engineer Jordan Katz has said he’d help out whenever I’m in a bind (he wants the show to sound good too), and, merely coincidentally, I’ve been inundated with requests from publicists about having some high profile and great writers on the show. In the coming weeks, look forward to episodes with the folks behind Andor, Dear Evan Hansen, Perry Mason, Bad Sisters, and more!
So, lots of good stuff coming up, and I can put out as many episodes a month as I want! The show is now 100% independently produced, so if you enjoy the podcast, please consider becoming a paid subscriber to the newsletter, as that supports to podcast as well.
Loved meeting so many of you at our get together last week! Thanks to everyone who came out. We had a pretty good sized group of lovely, smart people. We’ll definitely do another meet up this summer.
And thanks, too, to everyone who showed up for the Zoom Q&A with Matt Nix last Sunday. It was a particularly helpful session with a ton of smart, practical advice about both the craft of writing and good networking practices. The recording will be available for paid subscribers later this week.
